Aerosol artist Antonio "Chico" Garcia was born on the Lower East Side. In the 1980s, he helped to transform an art form associated with subway graffiti into a new mural tradition on city walls. Since the late 1960s, New Yorkers working with artists have created community murals as a means of protest, and to beautify or organize their neighborhoods. You'll find the mural on E 6 St very familiar, since Chico created it especially, to be the cover of this guide.
