MTA budget cuts have affected some of the Manhattan bus rides described in New York City by Bus and Subway. Click here for a current map and explanation of the changes.

One of the best-kept secrets in New York is that MTA New York City Transit buses and subways are the best and cheapest way for visitors to see the City. New York City by Bus and Subway (an officially licensed MTA publication) will show visitors how to utilize public transportation for sightseeing and will provide fascinating, interesting and unusual tours with commentary about the sights, neighborhoods and attractions along the way.

New York City by Bus and Subway is the key that will open the door for visitors to venture beyond the beaten tourists paths, getting them out on their own to discover the real New York - the neighborhoods, the people, the culture, the history and the ethnic diversity of the five boroughs.

This volume presents a unique collection of easy to follow self-guided bus rides and walking tours based on the use of public transportation in New York City. It has three sections: Part 1 will present Manhattan bus rides chosen from the Manhattan bus network that are the most interesting routes for sightseeing. Part 2 will feature 12 Manhattan walking tours originating from destination subway stops, and Part 3 will include tours of the other boroughs that combine the use of the Subway with bus rides and walking tours.

A "Who's Who" of distinguished New York historians, authors and tour guides including the borough historians, former mayor Ed Koch and former Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern wrote the commentaries for the tours. It also contains a greeting from Mayor Bloomberg as well as greetings from each of the borough presidents.
